CHAMBERS COMMIT TO CLIMATE CHANGE CHARTER
The British Chambers of Commerce recently launched its climate change charter committing the Chamber network to placing climate change at the heart of operations and providing advice and assistance to membership on reducing energy usage and mitigating the effects of climate change.
As part of this initiative to provide information and advice we are calling on all of our members to visit the website www.theclimatechangecharter.co.uk to get plenty of useful information. We would also like to encourage our member businesses to join Leicestershire Chamber in signing up and pledging, by completing a simple form, to reduce their carbon emissions through simple measures such as turning off lights and monitors when not required. A simple online calculator can show not only the CO2 emissions saved by your actions but also the money your business could save.
The more businesses who sign up to the pledge the stronger the voice of the British Chambers of Commerce and Leicestershire Chamber will have in showing that businesses are leading the way in tackling climate change.
HELP AVAILABLE FOR ARRANGING WORK EXPERIENCE VISITS
The British Chambers of Commerce has been involved in a website and leaflet designed to help employers plan visits by Work Experience students and ensure any risks are minimised. It has been written by business organisations, for businesses, and contains a useful 'Visit Planner' which details all the things an employer needs to do before a visit. More information including how companies can benefit from taking students on work experience can be found by visiting www.safevisits.org.uk
NEW GUIDE TO FUNDING IS ESSENTIAL COMMUNITY COMPANION
One of the most essential tools for any community organisation, group or association has just been officially launched by Regeneration East Midlands.
Billed as the most comprehensive guide to funding in the East Midlandsfor any community-based project, the new East Midlands Funding Index is designed to provide a snapshot of funders able and willing to support projects and initiatives delivered within the region. Details of over 50 potential funders, trusts, charities and foundations are listed together with an indication of the sorts of projects that they will support – from arts and culture, to community, education, heritage, regeneration and more. It is available in a printed booklet form or from a specially designed website at www.fundersindex.co.uk.
OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE GREEN CREDENTIALS
The National Recycling Awards, which reward best practice in the public and private sector, has announced the introduction of a new award for 2007 specifically aimed at small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The Small Businesses Recycling Initiative award is open to all companies with less than 250 staff that show a commitment to recycling and waste minimisation.
With over four million small businesses in the UK employing over 50% of the country's private sector workforce, SMEs can have a great deal of influence on environmental issues. In fact, according to the Environment Agency, over half of the UK's commercial waste is produced by SMEs but adopting recycling and waste prevention initiatives and using fewer resources can save these businesses money as well as help to raise awareness of recycling in the wider community.
Recognised as the stamp of excellence in the recycling industry, the National Recycling Awards were set up eight years ago to acknowledge and reward waste reduction and recycling initiatives among UK companies and organisations.
Full entry guidelines can be found on www.nationalrecyclingawards.com/250award and the closing date for entries is 24 August 2007.

emdaurges all businesses to view the guide which aims to help companies prepare to take part in the ODA procurement process. emda has the lead on the development of a national Business Opportunities Network and this guide sets out the how the network will be used to open up supply chain opportunities to SMEs throughout the UK.
