 Disposal of Non-Hazardous Waste - New Rules - 30th October 2007

With effect on 30th October, new rules apply for disposing of non-hazardous waste. Liquid wastes will be banned from landfill and other waste must be treated before it can be sent to landfill.

The aim is to encourage businesses to recycle more of the non-hazardous waste that is currently thrown out and sent to landfill. Implementation of the Landfill Directive on October 30 means that any non-hazardous waste must be treated in-house or elsewhere before it can be sent to a landfill site. This could mean separating rubbish between that which can be recycled or not, or paying a waste contractor to do this.

In order to assist your businesses with these new rules I have enclosed link’s to the Environment Agency’s information pages which lists two fact sheets explaining the new rules on waste and liquid waste.

Impact of EU Safety Of Chemicals Regulations

British Chambers of Commerce has commissioned an article about the EU REACH regulations. The article makes sobering reading. The drive to remove or substitute substances hazardous to human health and the environment was presumed to be, mainly, the concern of chemical manufacturers. This article explores the way in which these regulations are likely to affect most businesses. To download a copy, please click://DbFiles/file622.doc

Public Consultations On Post Office Closures

If you regularly use a Post office in the course of your business, please note the following: 2nd October was the starting date for public consultations on post office closures. The Government has charged Post Office Ltd with closing up to 2,500 post offices throughout the UK. 500 of these will be replaced by ‘outreach’ services (typically part-time services offered from a van or from within a local facility like a village hall).

Post Office Ltd’s programme will involve an average of four closures in every parliamentary constituency, with all closures taking place in 2008. The programme involves grouping closure proposals by ‘area plans’, subject to the six week public consultation determined by Government. The first three area plans – in Kent, East Midlands, and East Yorkshire –180 post offices are proposed for outright closures. Another 35 post offices will be replaced by ‘outreach’ services.  Each area plan will be subject to 11 weeks pre-consultation and six weeks public consultation.  The Public consultation ends on 12th November
